So in John McCain's book he tells of how he told his captors the names of the Green Bay Packers as his squadron members to confuse the Vietnamese. Now he's in Pittsburgh telling the press that he told his captors the names of the Steel Curtain (which hadn't materialized until after his release...)as the names he gave. Is this pandering? I actually wish it was; instead it is another blatant example of how disconnected McCain is with reality. Shia? Or was it Sunni? Packers? Or was it Steelers? Red button? Or was it the White Button? Stand to? Stand down?
Scary stuff.
I blame Jerry Kramer.
Gawd, I read Jerry Kramer's autobiography when I was 10 or 11.
We are definitely the same age! I remember reading that too. All I remember about the book is The Block.
It gets worse - I just found the book, sandwiched neatly between The Devil Wears Pinstripes and Cousy on the Celtic Mystique with a couple of Roger Angells and a David Halberstam nearby, which I mention in a vain (both senses) attempt to rescue my intellectual cred. The thing I recall from Instant Replay is that the Packers would sneak out of camp after bed check (!) to go bowling and drink beer. Now I really feel old.
