Fucking Hell

Times (uk): The names are drawn out of the pot to reveal an all-English quarter-final

Liverpool draws Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Not Schalke. Not Fenerbahce. Not Roma. The #1 team in England, Arsenal.

And my brother calls to point out that in between the two legs of those quarters, Liverpool plays Arsenal in the Premier League -- at Arsenal.

And if Liverpool should emerge victorious from the Arsenal quarters, who will they likely face? Chelsea.

Fucking hell.

I love the phrase "Fucking Hell". I love especially because in the British dictionary of cultural literacy it's the equivalent of "You gotta be shittin' me!" Which I so often heard as a player on the soccer fields and in the gymnasiums up and down the Eastern seaboard. Mostly this epithet was directed towards the referee; sometimes under one's breath or maybe out-loud as you ran away from the location of the infraction and on to the next play.

Seeing US players as Go-To players/ contributors on the pitch at an English Premiership game is another neat thing to see. When I was coming up an American playing English soccer would be the equivalent of the Jamaicans competing in the Olympic bobsled event. And yet, here we are in a goldrush boom era for Americans in England. I watched with utter glee as I saw Clint Dempsey TWICE mouth the words "Fucking Hell" after two overzealous tackles laid upon his ankles by hamfooted clods playing for Blackburn. The final treat was seeing free kick taking Jimmy Bullard wink to Dempsey only seconds before scoring the tying goal against the team backed by another American, Brad Friedel.
