This Is Why Rape Victims Don't Report Rape

Don’t Just Blame the Victim; Prosecute Her

A 17-year-old girl went to police at the urging of her friends after she was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including her boyfriend. The men testified that the act was consensual. After reviewing all the information and statements, prosecutors decided they didn’t think they could prove a rape allegation, and so declined to prosecute the case.

Instead, they prosecuted the victim for filing a false police report. Yesterday, she was found guilty.

The victim has never recanted her story. Instead, the decision was based on the judge’s opinion that the three men were more credible, in part because a police detective and the victim’s friends testified she did not “act traumatized” in the days after the incident.

We call this the "second rape": the humiliations visited upon rape victims by "the system" when they come forward. No wonder so few do.

Top Ten Bushisms of 2005

The Dumbest Things President Bush Said in 2005

10) "It's totally wiped out. ... It's devastating, it's got to be doubly devastating on the ground." --turning to his aides while surveying Hurricane Katrina flood damage from Air Force One, Aug. 31, 2005

9) "I'm occasionally reading, I want you to know, in the second term." --Washington, D.C., March 16, 2005

8) "This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. And having said that, all options are on the table." --Brussels, Belgium, Feb. 22, 2005

7) "I'm going to spend a lot of time on Social Security. I enjoy it. I enjoy taking on the issue. I guess, it's the mother in me." --Washington D.C., April 14, 2005

6) "Because the — all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers.
For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those — changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be — or closer delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled." --explaining his plan to save Social Security, Tampa, Fla., Feb. 4, 2005

5) "I think I may need a bathroom break. Is this possible?" --in a note to to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a U.N. Security Council meeting, September 14, 2005 (View photo)

4) "We've got a lot of rebuilding to do. First, we're going to save lives and stabilize the situation. And then we're going to help these communities rebuild. The good news is -- and it's hard for some to see it now -- that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch." (Laughter) --touring hurricane damage, Mobile, Ala., Sept. 2, 2005

3) "See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." --Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005 (Listen to audio)

2) "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." --to FEMA director Michael Brown, who resigned 10 days later amid criticism over his handling of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, Mobile, Ala., Sept. 2, 2005 (Listen to audio)

1) "You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that." --to a divorced mother of three, Omaha, Nebraska, Feb. 4, 2005 (Listen to audio)

John Bonifaz for Massachusetts Secretary of State

From the huffingtonpost:

Who the Heck Is John Bonifaz?

I'll vote for him just for this:

John went to Ohio last November to fight for the right to vote. When the Kerry Campaign took its $15M and went home, John took his $150 and bought a plane ticket to Columbus to help fight for a recount. (Video here of Bonifaz testimony at Conyers hearing on Ohio.)

A Democrat who fights! I'm sending him money tonight. Here's his website:

John Bonifaz

I'll also vote for him because our current Secretary of State, William Galvin, is an ambitious publicity seeking camera hog. Galvin could give Chuck Schumer a run for his money.

Schumer's propensity for publicity is the subject of a running joke amongst many commentators, leading Bob Dole to quip that "the most dangerous place in Washington is between Charles Schumer and a television camera."

Coincidence? I Don't Think So.

From scrutinyhooligan:

I Call Bulls**t

Sorry, but I gotta call bullshit.

The morning the news that 10 marines are killed by a roadside bombs breaks in the United States, 3 bombscares are called in around the country.

Conn. courthouses evacuated after bomb threat

Washington Monument shut after bomb threat

Taliban’ note on jet forces emergency landing

I hate to be so suspicious, but when you get an Administration that lied its way into a war, fake news stores in Iraqi news papers, fake letters to the editor in US newspapers, its easy to think that this is just psy-ops for the U.S. citizen.

Since this was posted, the deaths of four more American soldiers were announced. Three in a "vehicular accident,", one in a rocket attack.

14 dead in one day. And that ignores all the Iraqis who were killed and maimed in the past 24 hours. For what.

Framing

Ten U.S. Marines were killed and eleven Marines wounded in Fallujah yesterday by a homemade bomb, which the military has bureaucratically named the "IED", for "Improvised Explosive Device".

That just means bombs that were built with the material the U.S. military left unguarded when they stormed Iraq in 2003 with an insufficent number of troops.

Therefore, the Iraqi resistance is making bombs with the material looted from ammo dumps the US knew existed but callously chose not to guard. Improvised with the explosives Bush gave them.

Shouldn't there be a new name for these things?

Anyone care to add a suggestion?

Karl Rove, bless his black heart, Traitor's Greetings to him, would have been all over this. Democrats are slow to cotton to the power of words.

The Stupid People Are in Charge

Tuesday I visited the Statue of Liberty with my goddaughter (hereinafter "the kid"). What should have been a fun trip was a boring ode to the Bush Administration's paranoia.

We bought tickets for the ferry ($9.50 for me, $4.50 for the kid). Had to enter a canvas building on the shore to go through security, which included taking off our coats (luckily it was 60 degrees) and walking through a metal detector. The building led directly to the ferry entrance. We walked past at least 10 National Park Service employees and their contractors in the process.

When the ferry took off, most of the people on the boat, rather than look forward to the Statue of Liberty, looked backward at the tip of Manhattan and took pictures, thinking of the missing World Trade Center buildings.

On arrival at Liberty Island, the Park Service employees herded us into another line, to another canvas building. No food or drink was allowed in the building, came over the loudspeaker, as we watched a Park Service employee walk past the gate carrying an apple and a bottle of water. So we got out of line to put our little bags with a bottle of water in lockers which cost $1 for 2 hours (I wonder who gets that money? Probably another private contractor, not the Park Service).

Back into line. Our tickets were swiped. Herded into the canvas building where the line snaked around barriers and ropes. There was nothing in this building but a small kiosk with some information about the Statue. There were two flat screen TVs on the wall, but they remained blank. We stood in line for 35 minutes here. The kid stood quietly for about 10 minutes, but then she grew restless. When we finally got to the head of the line, we found a security officer who wore a badge that said "Wackenhut". Once we entered this second room, we waited again, for despite all the uniformed security in place, only two sets of machines were in use.

The first machine required that you step in and stand within a box taped to the floor. After a green light came on, a mechanical voice announced that air was coming. Shots of air were directed at your body from behind. The kid's hair flew into the air. Many people wearing light jackets or shirts had those blown into the air, exposing their underwear or worse. After passing through this machine, you had to walk through a conventional metal detector.

The folks in line were from all over the world. The group in front of us were Japanese. I watched the kids trying to explain his eye drops without English. He did a pretty good job, miming removing his glasses and putting drops in his eyes.

By the time we finally got past all these barriers the kid was bored. We flew through the museum and exhibits, finally arriving to...another line, which we stood in for 5 minutes before being allowed onto the elevator to the base of the statue itself. By the time we got out onto the base we had been in transit for almost an hour and a half. We circled the base once and headed out.

It wasn't really any fun at all. I didn't feel like I had celebrated freedom when I finally got off the ferry. The symbol of freedom, ruined by bureaucratic ineptitude and paranoia.

Then I got up on Wednesday morning and read that the Transportation Security Administration is ready to allow airline passengers to carry:
scissors less than four inches long and tools, such as screwdrivers, less than seven inches long

And I'm thinking, I had to go through security three times at the Statue of Liberty? I couldn't take in a bottle of water? Yet Bushco wants the guy next to me on a plane to be able to have a 7" knife?

Republicans are morons.

In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for. As for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican.

Thanksgiving Break

Heading to Albany, New York tomorrow for Thanksgiving with my best friend, my goddaughter, my mom & my sister & her dog. Pecan pies are cooling on the stove.

I'll be off-line for most of the week so I won't post here until next Wednesday.

In the meantime, here are some sites I have been enjoying lately. Something to read while I'm gone.

Murray Waas at the National Journal has been leading the journalistic pack ferreting out the incompetence, corruption and cronyism of the Bush administration. His piece of today, revealing the existence of a heretofore unrevealed Presidential Daily Briefing from September 21, 2001 is a case in point.

Ten days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush was told in a highly classified briefing that the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence linking the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein to the attacks and that there was scant credible evidence that Iraq had any significant collaborative ties with Al Qaeda, according to government records and current and former officials with firsthand knowledge of the matter.

The information was provided to Bush on September 21, 2001 during the "President's Daily Brief," a 30- to 45-minute early-morning national security briefing. Information for PDBs has routinely been derived from electronic intercepts, human agents, and reports from foreign intelligence services, as well as more mundane sources such as news reports and public statements by foreign leaders.

A Recovered Alcoholic Would Say "No" to Fermented Mare's Milk

But not President Lush. Famously incurious abroad, he managed to try the fermented mare's milk. Fermented mare's milk contains an alcohol percentage of up to 3%.

Mongolia gives Bush taste of nomadic life

ULAN BATOR (Reuters) - U.S.
President George W. Bush heard multi-toned Mongolian "throat singing" and drank mare's milk on Monday as he ended an Asian tour inside a nomadic hut that is a symbol of the country that produced Genghis Khan.

[]

Bush and the rest of the U.S. party were served a variety of traditional foods and drinks. Bush had a taste of fermented mare's milk and nibbled on some cheese curd that one participant said tasted like sour cream.

I guess the way his poll numbers are going, he needed a drink. In public. The wheels are really coming off, aren't they?

Abramoff Partner Pleads Guilty
Scanlon Admits He Conspired to Bribe Lawmaker

A onetime congressional staffer who became a top partner to lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to bribe a congressman and other public officials and agreed to pay back more than $19 million he fraudulently charged Indian tribal clients.

The plea agreement between prosecutors and Michael Scanlon, a former press secretary to then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), provided fresh detail about the alleged bribes. The document also indicated the nature of testimony Scanlon is prepared to offer against a congressman it calls "Representative #1" -- who has been identified by attorneys in the case as Rep. Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio).

Together, Abramoff and Scanlon are believed to have stolen over $80 million from the Indian tribes. So he must be happy to only be fined $19 million. He still has enough left over to pay his $600 an hour lawyers and keep his house in St. Bart's.

So he's singing like a canary, and the Bugman Tom Delay is going down. Sweet!

The "Get-Outs" Have It

John Murtha and the American public aren't the only ones who want the US out of Iraq:

Iraqi Leaders Call for Pullout Timetable

CAIRO, Egypt -- Reaching out to the Sunni Arab community, Iraqi leaders called for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces and said Iraq's opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.

The communique _ finalized by Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni leaders Monday _ condemned terrorism but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.

The leaders agreed on "calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces ... control the borders and the security situation" and end terror attacks.

Downsville Girls Soccer Team: New York Class D State Champs

Downsville beat New Lebanon at Union-Endicott's Ty Cobb stadium on Saturday, ending their season as state champions, and the only undefeated girls' soccer team in the state! This is the first state championship in the history of the tiny school, boys or girls.

A PERFECT ENDING: Downsville girls win state title, finish 24-0

Some factors to consider when reflecting on Downsville’s 24-0 season:

• Not only did the Eagles go undefeated, they never even trailed this season — that’s one day and eight hours worth of soccer.

• They won the first state championship of any kind in the school’s history.

• They outlasted a talented Tigers team that had won 10 consecutive Section Two Class D titles and won state titles in 1992 and 1994.

• They outscored the opposition this season, 140-12.

Girls Soccer: Hoyt's goals help top Eagles' perfect season
Downsville wins first state Class D title

It must be noted that some of the great Downsville girls soccer teams of the past never had the opportunity to compete for a state title. For example, Downsville girls went 50-0 in 1978, going undefeated in soccer, basketball and volleyball. But there were no state tournaments for the girls then. Many of the players on the field for Downsville this weekend were the daughters of those players who never got the recognition they deserved. They made sure this team got feted. The firemen met the team bus at the town line and paraded them through, sirens blaring. People were standing in their driveways to cheer. The bridge over the creek in the center of town was festooned with purple and white balloons. Fans lined the sidewalks of Main Street, waving Downsville flags and blowing horns.

On to basketball season, where Downsville girls were state runners-up last year and plan to win it all this year.

Congratulations, and good luck!

The Doofus Marches On

I received this in an email this morning:

Battle Hymn of the Republicans

Mine eyes have seen the bungling of that stumbling moron Bush;
He has blathered all the drivel that the neo-cons can push;
He has lost sight of all reason 'cause his head is up his tush;
The Doofus marches on.

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
His wreckage will live on.

I have heard him butcher syntax like a kindergarten fool;
There is warranted suspicion that he never went to school;
Should we fault him for the policies -- or is he just their tool?
The lies keep piling on.

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
His wreckage will live on.

I have seen him cut the taxes of the billionaires' lone heir;
As he spends another zillion on an aircraft carrier;
Let the smokestacks keep polluting -- do we really need clean air?
The surplus is now gone.

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Your safety net is gone!

Now he's got a mighty hankerin' to bomb a prostrate state;
Though the whole world knows its crazy -- and the U.N. says to wait;
When he doesn't have the evidence, "We must prevaricate."
Diplomacy is done!

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
His wreckage will live on.

Oh, a trumped-up war is excellent; we have no moral bounds;
Should the reasons be disputed, we'll just make up other grounds;
Enraging several billions -- to his brainlessness redounds;
The Doofus marches on!

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya'!

There's Only One Roy Keane-O

Farewell to Manchester United captain Roy Keane, unceremoniously dumped by ManU yesterday.

The Guardian:

Roy Keane and Alex Ferguson: 1993-2005

Ushered out of the door by the most ruthless manager in the business [Sir Alex Ferguson], Keane's exit could hardly have been less dignified for a man who has graced the Old Trafford pitch for the last 12 years.

Roy of the rage can look back at Old Trafford in anger - and with pride

The Old Trafford dressing room will be quieter without him, dangerously so. United were unbeaten on all six of his appearances this season. The affluence of the squad may drift into a tolerance of the defeats he loathed. It will be a tamer club without him and almost certainly a less successful one.

I was privileged to attend a Man U game last month & had the pleasure of spotting the Man U captain glowering at the team from the Director's Box. I did get to see him play a few times on the Man U tours of the US and he was something. Even in his 30s he played with ferocity.

I wonder how soon Sir Alex will let some other player wear #16? And who will be captain? Scholes doesn't really have the personality for the role. Part of Keane's fury with the team is that no one has stepped up to lead in his absence. Well, now they'll have their chance.

Dick Cheney is a Virus on the US Operating System

I've spent the day figuring out why my computer kept knocking me off the internet. The wonderful world of viruses. An hour on the phone with Verizon, then installing & running ad-aware seem to have solved the problem.

And Big Time? He's everywhere. Here are the Dick Cheney highlights of the day, from the ridiculous to the far too real.

The Dick Cheney Random Fact Generator, from Rob the Dirty Liberal (love that name). Hilarious. I've added a few, although not the scatological ones. There are no pictures, but language-wise, this is not work-safe. Here's the first one on the list; as of this posting, there are over 200 random facts for your laughing pleasure.

1. One time, Dick Cheney stabbed a delivery boy just for forgetting his egg rolls.

Great Dick Cheney/1984 pic, from Jesus General: Quotations from the Deputy Leader

AP quotes John Murtha (D-Pa.) letting Cheney have it:

Vice President Dick Cheney jumped into the fray Wednesday by assailing Democrats who contend the Bush administration manipulated intelligence on Iraq, calling their criticism "one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city."

Murtha, a Marine intelligence officer in Vietnam, angrily shot back at Cheney: "I like guys who've never been there that criticize us who've been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done."

Ex-CIA chief: Cheney 'VP for torture'

LONDON, England -- Former CIA director Stansfield Turner has labeled Dick Cheney a "vice president for torture."

In an interview with Britain's ITV news Thursday, Turner said the U.S. vice president was damaging America's reputation by overseeing torture policies of possible terrorist suspects, the UK's Press Association reported.

"I'm embarrassed the United States has a vice president for torture," Turner said, according to ITV's Web site. "He condones torture, what else is he?"

Turner said he did not believe U.S. President George W. Bush's statements that the United States does not use torture.

Turner ran the Central Intelligence Agency from 1977 to 1981 under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

"We have crossed the line into dangerous territory," PA quoted Turner as saying. "I think it is just reprehensible."

Referring to Cheney, Turner said: "I just don't understand how a man in that position can take such a stance."

Long Live the Corporate Media

Marty Kaplan, Huffington Post:

Journalism: R.I.P.

Mainstream journalism has cancer. The diagnosis – stage three, terminal – was made this week, by anyone with eyes to see.

[]

The worst – and this is what pushed me over the edge – is the disgraceful mischaracterization of the impact of the Woodward revelation on Fitzgerald’s case against Libby. With the exception of Keith Olberman, everyone is parroting Libby’s lawyer’s lie that this disproves Fitzgerald’s assertion that Libby was the first person in the Administration to leak Valerie Plame’s name. Fitzgerald, of course, didn’t say that. He said that Libby was “the first government official known to have told a reporter.” This is not a small distinction; it is not quibbling about words. If Woodward hadn’t decided that the World-According-to-Bob rules meant that he could keep his mouth shut while the Grand Jury was still empaneled, then Fitzgerald would have been able to add the leak to Woodward to his timetable. (And if Libby hadn’t thrown sand in Fitzgerald’s eyes, the investigation could have gone deeper.)

And yet now the Washington Post, ABC News, CNN, NBC and the AP have spread the lie, and soon every lazy stenographer on the planet posing as a journalist will gladly cut and paste this Republican propaganda into their narrative of the most troubling chapter in modern American history. What does it say about the news profession when most of the voices determined to ensure accuracy are onliners working without benefit of staffs below them, editors above them, or brand-name seals of approval from the priesthood?

Or, as I like to say, Journalism is Dead. Long Live the Corporate Media.

Centering

Just took my first wheel throwing class at the Worcester Craft Center. It seemed so simple when my teacher demonstrated. Then I got up there and couldn't remember which part of which hand was supposed to push or pull. Centering the clay is much more difficult than it looks. Great fun, though. I returned home covered with mud.

I am learning to throw while standing up. This is unusual. Most people learn on a low wheel while sitting on a small stool. You have to bend forward a little as you work. Many older throwers end up with significant back injuries and back surgeries. I read some articles this summer by a potter named John Glick. He would throw for 8 to 10 hours a day when he was young. I read an article of his from the 1970s where he described the dinnerware sets he made, one of which was purchased by Vice President Walter Mondale. Then I read an article he wrote in the late 1990s where he described learning to throw standing up after having disc surgery on his back. He made his own wheel by building a stand for his old one. I had been wary of the seated throwing position before reading his articles, and they cemented my desire to learn the modern way.

My teacher is Kristin Keiffer. She makes beautiful elegant ware, through a combination of throwing and handbuilding. She throws standing up, and told me she apprenticed with John Glick for a year! Small world. That's when she started to throw standing.

Kristin Keiffer Tea Set

John Glick dinnerware

Throwing is very different than handbuilding. You get and keep the clay so wet. I did make one small pot that wasn't horrible. I didn't have high expectations for my first day so was pleased that I made one thrown pot. There are two women in my class who took their first class last session. They were both amazed that I made a pot worth keeping!

Another Assistant to the President Commits Treason

Raw Story is reporting tonight that Bob Woodward's source was Stephen Hadley. In June of 2003, Hadley, like I. Lewis Libby, was an Assistant to the President of the United States.

If Bush wasn't such a fucking moron, wouldn't you think he gave the orders to out Plame?

11:15 p.m. update: Dependable Renegade's pics of Hadley, now and then.
